Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions before starting OCD therapy.

What is ERP, and why is it used for OCD?
ERP stands for Exposure and Response Prevention. It’s a structured approach where you practice facing triggers while reducing the compulsions that keep OCD going. Over time, you build tolerance for uncertainty and the urges lose intensity.
Do you treat Pure O and mental compulsions?
Yes. OCD can look “quiet” on the outside. Mental compulsions often include reassurance-seeking, reviewing, neutralizing, checking feelings, praying to undo thoughts, or trying to get certainty. We treat the OCD cycle, including the mental rituals people miss.
Will you force me to do exposures I’m not ready for?
No. ERP is collaborative and paced. We build a plan together, start with steps that feel doable, and move up as your skills and confidence grow. You’re never thrown into something without preparation.
What happens in a typical session?
Sessions are practical and structured. We identify triggers and rituals, choose a targeted skill or exposure to practice, and you leave with a clear plan for what to work on between sessions.
What if my intrusive thoughts feel embarrassing to talk about?
You’re not the only one. OCD commonly targets what you care about most, and the content can feel disturbing or shameful. Treatment focuses on changing the OCD response pattern, not judging you for having thoughts.
What makes Real Solutions different?
You’ll work with a highly trained clinician with years of OCD experience, membership in the IOCDF community, and training through the Beck Institute. Sessions stay structured and skills-based, targeting both visible compulsions and mental rituals.
